Dating in a foreign country
Dating in a foreign country can be challenging: not only because of the language barriers you might have to face, but also because of cultural differences. Language barriers can easily lead to miscommunications and make it harder to express your feelings and open up. Although cultural differences are very exciting and teach you a lot, it’s good to always treat a person as an individual. This is the most important thing to build a genuine connection.
When you want to start dating in a foreign country, it’s helpful to manage you’re expectations. Dating in a foreign country can be a lot different than what you’re used to from your homecountry. But of course that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have boundaries. Always stay true to yourself and what you find important in a relationship!
Our experiences with dating abroad
As we moved to Lisbon in 2024, we’re still kind of new to the dating scene. So far we’ve only dated through using online dating apps – what we also discuss in the episode ๐. One thing that is especially challenging about the dating scene in Lisbon is that there’s a lot of digital nomads that come and go, which makes it harder to build a long term relationship.
So when it comes to dating in Lisbon, it’s important to have clear for yourself what your dating goals are. If you’re looking for a longterm relationship, you’ll probably be more likely to date locals or expats that have a permanent residency in Lisbon. Since we plan on living in Lisbon for a long time (especially now that we have this podcast ;-)), we’re also more interested in building longterm connections. Not only when it comes to a romantic connection, but also when it comes to making friends.
